Native Plants

After a long winter, no matter how many times you see it, you are always astonished at the profusion of color in the Montana early summer wildflowers everywhere! In addition, you'll discover that wild berries abound at the ranch, including raspberries, chokecherries and gooseberries, just to name a few.

In open prairie grasslands and in the gently rolling hills, you might see oyster plant, lupine, prairie coneflower, bitterroot, arrowleaf balsamroot and Indian paintbrush. In semiarid pockets on some parts of the ranch, you usually find sage, shrubby cinquefoil, rabbitbrush and an occasional prickly pear cactus, among other plants.

Just before you enter the more heavily wooded part of a slope, there are a number of beautiful flower types: yellowbells, cushion phlox, pasqueflower, several milkvetches, biscuitroots and sagebrush buttercup.

At the highest elevations on the ranch, there may be avalanche lily, queen's cup, columbine, alpine paintbrush, American bistort, and elephant head's pedicularis.
